Why let all the organic goodness go to waste? The same wonderful nutrients can be used to feed new gardens beds! Unfortunately, it was always a chore to collect the kitchen scraps because we never had a good container to hold the goodies. We tried old quart sized yogurt containers, but they were too small. Our goal is to empty the container once per week. The yogurt containers filled up way too fast. We looked into buying a kitchen compost bin, but many of them were upwards of $30 to $50! Really? Just for a bucket?

As luck would have it, we happen to frequent our local farmer's
market where we get our granola in bulk from a local company. And the
granola comes in a nice handy plastic bucket! As we finished munching
the yummy granola, we re-purposed the bin for a perhaps a higher
purpose.

We drilled some holes on the lid to allow for air circulation. You can see a cocentric ring of holes in the picture on the upper left.

Then we bought a pack of charcoal filters from the pet store. These are normally used to neutralize odors from litter boxes. The filters were a bit large, so we just simply cut them in half, and save the rest for later. You will have to change the charcoal filter every few months. Just taped it with some masking tape to the inside of the lid, and there you have it!

We now have a low cost compost pail that's sturdy and roomy. It even has a handle that makes the weekly dump out a bit more manageable. Have you made your own kitchen compost bin? We'd love to hear about how you did it!

When reading ingredient lists, often you would come across "Fragrance". What does that really mean? Because fragrances are considered trade secrets, full disclosure is not required. So it can be any combination of chemicals including those derived from petroleum such as phthalates that are hormone disruptors or benzene derivatives that has been linked to cancer and birth defects.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are derived from plants. Either cold pressed or steam distilled, or extracted by alcohol. Essential oils carry healing properties of the plants that they are derived from. The cost of essential oils depend on the type of plant it's derived from. For example, it takes 60,000s roses to make one ounce of rose essential oil. So rose essential oil is much more expensive than sweet orange essential oil, an oil with much higher yield. Just because essential oils come from natural sources, it doesn't mean they are safe for everyone. It's possible to have allergic reactions to essential oils, and you need to be careful when using essential oils during pregnancy. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, any pesticides or herbicides can also be dramatically concentrated. That's why I like to choose certified organic essential oils whenever possible.

Also, because it takes so much plant material, it's important to consider the sustainability of the resources and energy to grow the plants and distill the oils. Certain plants are endangered, such as rosewood and sandalwood. So always make sure that your supplier is using a sustainable source for your essential oils.

So what's your favorite essential oil and what do you use it for? Leave your comments below! It seems like every cream or serum has the word "nutri-" or "regen-", but inside the shiny bottle, what mystery ingredients are working the magic? More importantly, how much scientific proof is there that those precious droplets will turn back the calendar? To get the most bang for your buck, stop paying for the glitsy bottle. Instead, turn to the back and look for these top anti-aging super stars in the ingredient list.

Green Tea - Packed with catechines, a class of super antioxidants, green tea combat environmental damage and prevents premature aging. It's even been shown to combat skin cancer! Use a green tea mask and leave on for at least 10 minutes to allow the nutrients to sink in. Or just use green tea bags steeped in cold water and apply the bags directly to eyes to reduce excessive baggage.

Argan Oil - Also known as Moroccan oil, has been called liquid gold and produced from the kernel of the argan tree. With twice as much vitamin E as olive oil and lighter texture, it's suitable for both oily and dry skin types. You can apply it directly to face to moisturize without leaving you feeling greasy. It's also fantastic in another product, just make sure it's one of the first ingredients to get the most benefit. Personally, I love it on the corners of my eyes before going to sleep to keep my peepers smooth!

"Vitamin C also stimulates collagen
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) - Ok, actually they are two ingredients, but they work best as a team. When a free radical strikes, it's usually a chain reaction, vitamin C neutralizes the initial free radical while vitamin E stops the domino effect. That's why when used together, they help prevent pre-mature aging and sun damage. Vitamin C also stimulates collagen
synthesis, plumping up wrinkly areas and lightens dark spots.

Vitamin A (retinol) - Retin-A is the only medication approved for treating sun damage, but it's prescription only. The over the counter version is retinol, a natural form of vitamin A. It encourage new skin to grow and repairs damage. Vitamin A, will break down in the sun and possibly do bad things to your skin if exposed to sun, so spread it on before bed for best results. Also avoid it if you are pregnant.

Getting more wrinkles, like getting wiser, is a normal part of aging! But pre-mature
aging is less than ideal
to say the least. Oxidation happens to the best of us, just like how apples turn brown after they're peeled. The same things happens to our skin, and it's perfectly normal. But when it happens too much due to sun damage, smoking, or just pure genetics, that's when antioxidants come to the rescue. Try incorporating these ingredients in your skin care regimen and report back on your results! Also, remember the 7 habits of young looking people because small changes sustained over a long time leads to big differences in outcome.

Like it or not, aging is a rite of passage that everyone goes through. With every birthday, we get wiser, but it also comes with a few more fine lines, or wrinkles. We've all met the lucky guy or gal who's in their 50's but looks 30. Are they just born with fountain of youth skin? Or do they know some secret that we don't? It turns out, there are some simple ways to prevent premature aging. No, I'm not talking about some $100 per bottle magic elixir. Here are some tips to get you started on the road to fabulous skin and looking good today and 10 years down the road!

1. Wear sunscreen and avoid tanning salons. UV rays are the number one cause of skin aging. Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to cell damage, protect yourself from both by wearing a natural non-toxic full-spectrum sunscreen. This means inside the car and in the winter too. And don't forget to apply on hands and necks, those are the most often overlooked spots for sunscreen, and first places to show signs of aging.

2. Don't smoke. It's proven beyond a shadow of doubt that smoking causes wrinkles, oh, and cancer and heart disease too. Nicotine causes narrowing of the blood vessels so skin is starved of oxygen and nutrients. Also the facial expressions when you smoke can contribute to wrinkles.

3. Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Believe it or not, the weight of your head resting on your face can worsen existing wrinkles. Since we spend about one third of our life sleeping, the damage can quickly add up. Pure silk pillows are smooth and breathable, therefore less likely to cause sleep creases. It's also gentler on hair too!

Source: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

4. Eat your vegetables and fruits. It's been shown that a diet rich in vegetables, beans, olive oil, and fish leads to significantly younger looking skin compared to a diet rich in sugar, milk, and butter. We don't need a double blind scientific study to figure out that a healthy diet leads to a healthy person. Since skin is a reflection of overall health, younger skin is a natural result of a healthy diet!

5. Handle gently. Excessive force and harsh chemicals during washing, drying, and application of creams can stretch delicate skin causing wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Splash your face with lukewarm water and a use a gentle no-toxin cleanser. Exfoliate once or twice a week with a clean wet cotton wash cloth or a soft particle face scrub. Avoid crushed walnut shell or apricot kernels, they are too harsh and can cause microtears. To dry, rest a dry cotton wash cloth on your face, do not wipe since wet skin is especially vulnerable to stretching. Also be sure to use your ring fingers to apply facial and eye creams to avoid using too much force.

6. Wear sunglasses with the best UV protection possible. Sunglasses not only protect delicate eye area from sun damage, prevent cataracts, they also cut down on squinting, which can lead to eye wrinkles as well. Be sure to pick a pair that blocks out at least 95% of UVA and UVB rays. Pick a wrap-around style for maximum coverage.

Source: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Summer is upon us and it's time for
fun outdoors. My favorite thing about winter is that there are no bugs! True
story: I went to the ER once for a mosquito bite because my leg swelled up so
much I could barely walk. If you're like me, you'd do anything to keep those
disease carrying biting creatures away from yourself and your kids. But as a
cloth diapering, holistic mom and well informed scientist, I'd also do anything
to keep pesticides and dangerous chemical away from myself and my baby. What to

insects to land, but does not kill the insect. It can be purchased at 5% to
100% concentrations. Generally, the
higher the percentage, the longer the protection, but for most applications, 10
to 25% is sufficient. The Center for
Disease Control recommends under 35% for adults and under 10% for children.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Pros:
Proven, long lasting protection and approved to prevent spread of disease by
the Center for Disease Control. Excellent mosquito repellent.

breathable fabrics such as GoreTex, sunglasses, etc. Poor tick repellent. May
cause skin irritations, avoid contact with eyes or broken skin.

backyard play, use a geraniol based wearable repellent such as the Bug Band. For camping in the woods, bundle up with long sleeves and
use a repellent lotion such as the <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Bug Band Spray Lotion<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">, and reapply often.

any time during the day, tick may carry Lyme disease and a host of other nasty
illnesses. Ticks are also attracted to carbon dioxide, (bad news for those of
us who breathe). While it’s helpful to wear white to make ticks easier to spot,
the fact you are wearing white will also attract them to you, catch 22. My
suggestion is to wear dark clothing, but do a careful inspection after
returning from the outdoors.

which contain Permetherin soaked cotton balls that mice and other rodents love
to collect and build nests. This doesn’t harm the rodents, but kills the ticks
that they carry. For hikes in the woods, tuck your pants into socks, and shirt
into pants. Don’t sit on logs and stay on trails. Find a partner and check hard
to see areas for ticks, and wash and dry all clothing to kill any hitch hikers. – The blackfly season can start as early as mid-May in the mountainous regions
of upstate NY. While the disease carrying potential is low, their bite is
painful, and once they bite, they are relentless! DEET is not effective in
repelling blackflies, some studies actually show that it attracts them.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Hope this guide helps you come up
with your own set of techniques to protect yourself and your family from
annoying, disease carrying bugs. Also remember, to avoid "bug and sun" products
because they are usually less effective for both purposes. It might seem handy
at first, but you might need to reapply sunscreen, but don’t really need more
bug repellent, and now you are either overdosing on repellent or scorching in
the sun. For more ideas on natural insect protection, visit the Times Union Holistic Health Blog by Judi England!

Did you know that nail polish is considered hazardous waste?

Nail coloring has been around for centuries and has been practiced by many cultures. But today's nail polish contains dangerous chemicals such as toulene, phthalates, and formaldehyde. Your nails are not impenetrable barriers, like skin, they are sponges that breath. Chemicals
painted on your nails can easily be absorbed into
your body.

Here are the top 3 toxic ingredients commonly found in nail polish:

Toulene, a solvent, can cause tiredness, confusion, memory loss, nausea, loss of appetite, and hearing
and color vision loss when inhaled.

Dibutyl phthalate, a plasticizer that prevents nail polish chipping. Also a hormone disruptor that has been linked to reproductive system disorders. This chemical is banned in all personal care products in Europe. In the US, some nail polish manufactures started eliminating it from their formulas. Be sure to check labels for this and other phthalates.

Formaldehyde, commonly found in nail hardeners and a known carcinogen. The EPA allows no more than 0.1 parts per million in the air of new homes, but nail products can have more than 20,000 times that (0.2%).

Chemicals can be absorbed through nails, and also breathed in during application and drying, and stored in fatty tissue in the body, such as the breasts. Nail salon workers are especially at risk.

Nail polish remover is another toxic mix. The most common nail polish remover is acetone based. Acetone is a harsh solvent, and can cause dry and brittle nails. A good alternative is this soy based remover from Karma Organics.

Here are some practical tips for healthy nails while minimizing health risks:

Go without nail polish, and just keep nails manicured and clean. Especially if you are pregnant or have young children.

If you do use nail polish, choose a water based one, such as Honey Bee Gardens or Suncoat. For non-toxic long lasting polish, try Karma Organics.

Limit your visits to nail salons, just being there may expose you to toxic fumes.

If you do go to nail salons, BYOP - Bring your own nail polish, so you can control what goes on your nails.

Use a gentle nail polish remover, such as the organic lavender nail polish remover by Karma Organics. It will be a little slower than acetone based removers, but it's well worth it, because there's no toxic fumes and leaves nails shiny and moisturized.

Deodorant - Your underarm skin is one of the thinnest and most sensitive areas on your body, so it's important to treat it with tender care. Common deodorants contain aluminum chlorohydrate (an antiperspirant) and parabens (preservatives) that can irritate skin and even has been linked to cancer (source).

Sweating is a necessary function that cools the body and purges toxins from the bloodstream. Aluminum chlorohydrate works by plugging up sweat ducts so sweat and toxins can't get out.

Too much sweat leads to moisture, creating an ideal breeding ground for smelly bacteria. How to avoid toxins and keep dry and fresh naturally? Read on.

First, use a gentle soap (such as pure castille soap) on the underarm to keep it clean without stripping natural oils. Wear breathable clothing such as cotton, silk, or wool. Keeping underarm hair short also helps air circulation. Waxing or shaving works for women, men can try cutting the hair as short as possible. If you need more protection, here are a few options depending on your needs:

Sports Lover

Lafe's natural mineral deodorant which prevents odor causing
bacteria to grow. No streaks, no preservatives, no fragrances, and it truly performs. Mineral deodorant does contain potassium alum, an
aluminum compound, but safer alternative since designed to kill bacteria on skin's surface, not plug up sweat ducts. Despite the scare about aluminum and its link to Alzheimers, the American Alzheimers Association debunks this myth. If you want to go totally aluminum-free, try the next option.

DIY Lover

This option is easy and versatile, you can adjust the proportions of ingredients to your liking. Melt the 1.5T cocoa butter, 1.5T coconut oil, and 1T beeswax over medium-low heat. Once melted, turn off the heat and add 3T arrowroot powder or corn starch and 0.5T baking soda.
Whisk the ingredients gently until all are well combined. Add a few drops of Vitamin E and/or essential oils such as lavender or tea tree oil if desired. Let cool and spoon the mixture into an old deodorant container or large mouthed jar for storing.
Is it really better for me and the environment? While I encourage everyone to buy organic, fair-trade, local everything, sometimes it's simply not possible whether because of availability or budget. In the real world, we must pick and choose our battles. So what are the beauty products you should really avoid or substitute? Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting about the top 5 toxic products to think twice about.
Chemicals placed near eyes can be easily smudged into them. Surprisingly, it's illegal for other skincare products to contain mercury, FDA makes an exception for eye make up (source). Therefore, mascara to may contain up to 65 part per million mercury as a preservative. In addition, aluminum powder and triethanolamine (TEA) are commonly found in mascara, both have been linked to toxicity and allergies. Using mascara and fake eyelashes increases your chance of losing eyelashes while you're removing makeup. And for every eyelash you lose, it can take 2 to 4 months to grow back! So much for boosting your va-va-voom! Also, it's important to replace your mascara at least every 3 months. Bacteria can grow inside the tube (yes, even with all those preservatives), and cause eye infections.
Baby's first bath can be an exciting as well as daunting experience, especially for us new moms. While we can't always control exactly how our babies will react, we can do our best to make it as enjoyable as possible. That includes picking a baby wash that will not leave behind harmful chemicals. Nearly all baby products use words like "gentle" and "tear-free" on their packaging. Just looking at the list of ingredients can be overwhelming! Which ones are safe and which should be avoided? To help you out, here are 5 ingredients to avoid when choosing a baby body wash for your little one:

1. Ingredient listed as: “fragrance” - Since fragrance formulations are proprietary, companies do not need to disclose exactly what chemicals are in the fragrance. Besides, why would you want to cover up that wonderful new baby smell with something artificial? Unscented is best, but some natural products contain essential oils that provide anti-bacterial action as well as give a wonderful scent.

2. Ingredients that end with “-paraben” - These include methylparaben, polyparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, etc. which are low cost preservatives commonly used in mass produced cosmetic products. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone system disruptors. Some studies have linked parabens to cell mutations and cancer.

3. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and its close relative Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – These are detergents used as an inexpensive foaming agents from hand soap to toothpaste. Studies have shown that it’s a known irritant in both humans and animals. Other negatives include contamination with dioxane (a known carcinogen), allergic reactions, and hair loss.

4. Formaldehyde releasers such as “DMDM hydantoin”, “Quaternium-15”, “Imidazolidinyl urea”, “Diazolidinyl urea”, and “Metheneamine” – These literally breakdown and release formaldehyde, a chemical used to preserve dead bodies. While they are effective preservatives, they can cause allergic reactions and dermatitis. In the U.S., approximately 20% of cosmetics and personal care products contain a formaldehyde releaser.

5. Ingredients that begin with “PEG-“ such as “PEG-8 Laurate”, “PEG-14 Laurate”, “PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate” - These chemical are used as surfactants and emulsifiers. PEGs may contain potential toxic impurities such as ethylene oxide (a known toxin) and 1, 4-dioxane (a known carcinogen). PEGs alone were also found to be damaging to kidneys if applied to damaged skin.

Be sure to check the ingredient list next time you’re shopping, and reap the benefits of truly natural bathing experience for your little one!Natural Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00475164130644820574noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3373445766504195657.post-4181724504069111992012-01-03T18:14:00.000-08:002012-10-13T23:57:27.301-07:00Winter Skincare: Do's and Don'ts

Dry, cold air can leave skin chaffed and itchy in the winter months. Skin can even crack and bleed. Ouch! As the seasons change, our skin needs some extra love and care. Follow these tips to keep your skin soft and healthy throughout the snowy season, and beyond!

Do drink plenty of water. At least 8 glasses per day to keep your skin and the rest of your body healthy. Limit coffee and alcohol, which can cause dehydration.

Don't wear tight fitting clothes, or clothes that make you feel itchy. Choose cashmere or cotton, instead of wool.

Do eat plenty of foods that contain biotin (vitamin B7) such as whole grains, swiss chard, egg yolk, and cheese. Biotin deficiency can cause dry skin and hair loss.

Don't wear wet gloves or socks, change them as soon as you can! Wetness can make dry skin even worse and cause cracking.

Do wear sunscreen. Winter sun, especially combined with snow glare, can damage skin even if doesn't feel hot. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen, see my post on Sunscreen Safety or see the Skin Deep Database's 2011 Sunscreen report for recommendations of safe sunscreens.

Don't use harsh peels or masks, such as ones that contain clay. Instead, choose masks that moisturize and nourish. A personal favorite is Jurlique's Intense Recovery Mask. Also avoid harsh exfoliators that contain crushed walnut shells. Instead, I like Pangea Organics Adzuki Bean and Cranberry Scrub because it gently exfoliates with soft adzuki beans leaving skin silky soft, without over drying.

Do try adding oatmeal (1-2 cups for a standard bath tub) to your bath water to fight eczema and sooth itchiness.

Don't take hot baths or use hot water to wash hands. Hot water can dissolve skin's natural oils. Instead, take lukewarm water and keep baths and showers short.

Do pat dry (don't rub) and apply moisturizer immediately after showering or bathing. For face, pat dry with wash cloth, apply appropriate toner for your skin type, then apply moisturizer.

Don't wash hands too often. The skin on your hands is thinner than the rest of the body, so more vulnerable to dryness. Use a gentle soap, and lukewarm water when hand-washing is necessary.

Do use moisturizer that contains natural humectants such as shea butter, lanolin, avocado oil, and jojoba oil.

Don't use hand or body wash that contains sodium laureth sulfate, a detergent that can irritate dry skin and cause eczema.
Summer is here and we all love to spend time outdoors. Some sunshine is good for us, we all need Vitamin D. But how much is too much? And how do we protect ourselves with safely and effectively? To select the best sunscreens, first we should understand the sun's radiation. There are two types of ultraviolet radiation we need to protect our skin from, UVA and UVB.

What's the difference between UVA and UVB?
UVA is ultraviolet radiation between 400-320nm wavelength and UVB is between 320-290nm wavelength. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy of radiation. UVA rays account for 90 to 95% of UV radiation that reaches the earth. While UVB makes up only 5-10% of solar radiation, its high energy damages surface epidermal layers and causes sunburn. UVB is strongest between 10AM and 4PM, from April to October and do not significantly penetrate glass. UVA is present equally throughout the daylight hours and throughout the seasons, and can penetrate cloud and glass. UVA penetrates deeper layers of skin and causes tanning. However, both types of UV rays can cause skin cancer because they damage skin cells and alter their DNA. Both types of rays also contribute to premature aging of skin.

What is SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measurement of the number of times it takes for skin to redden under UVB radiation with the sunscreen compared to no sunscreen. For example, SPF 15 means that it takes 15 times for skin with the sunscreen to redden compared to no sunscreen. As a rule of thumb, a SPF15 sunscreen screens 93% of the sun’s UVB rays; SPF 30 protects against 97%; and SPF 50, 98%. Health professionals agree that at least SPF15 is needed for adequate sun protection. However, a high SPF number doesn't necessarily mean that the sunscreen also protects against UVA rays. And just because the sunscreen has a high SPF number, it doesn't mean it's safe to stay out in the sun longer.

Types of sunscreen ingredients: Physical and Chemical
Physical sunscreens are particles that reflect sun's rays away from skin. Two are approved by the FDA: Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. Both of them offer protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Chemical sunscreens form a thin layer on top of skin and absorb UV rays before they reach the skin. The downside of chemical sunscreens is that some of them form free radicals and can contribute to skin aging, cause irritation, allergic reactions, and possible long term health effects. The FDA approves 17 active ingredients for sunscreens, 15 of which are chemical sunscreens. Some are powerful free radical generators, estrogenic, mutagenic, and may even cause skin cancer.

The only downside to physical sunscreen formulations is that they tend to leave white streaks on skin and are thicker so may take longer to apply. However, since physical sunscreens are particles, they do not get absorbed into skin like chemical sunscreens do. They also don't react or release any potentially harmful by-products, and can be easily washed off. Physical sunscreens are really be best choice because they are low risk and offer wide-spectrum UV protection.

Sun Protection Tips
Staying out of the sun by using shade and tightly meshed clothing is your best protection against damaging UV rays. However, when sunscreens are needed, opt for one that contain both zinc oxide and titanium oxide as active ingredients, together they protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for SPF15 or higher for everyday activities such as a stroll in the park; opt for SPF30 or higher for physical activities such as swimming or running. Also remember to re-apply every 2 hours to ensure adequate protection. For babies under 6 months, it's best keep them out of sun altogether.

Organiworks offers physical sunscreens by Goddess Garden. It did not produce as rich a lather as did Dr. Bronner 's Organic Mild Baby Soap or Zum Soaps. The scent is very mild and barely noticeable. I have to hold it up to my nose, and even so I barely smell anything.

Overall its a nice mild soap and lasts a couple weeks with two people showering everyday. I would recommend it for people with sensitive skin or for children and babies. Each soap is 3.5 oz, and costs $7.00 for two from Amazon.com, and qualifies for Super Saver Shipping and Amazon Prime.
And just like our skin, it can be damaged by environmental factors like excessive sun and harsh chemicals. Follow these three easy steps by eliminating toxins, protecting from damage, and nourishing with natural ingredients to achieve and keep naturally beautiful hair.

1. Cleanse Naturally
Our hair picks up dirt and pollution throughout the day, so its important to remove these toxins by shampooing. Use a natural shampoo without silicones to minimize residue. If you have been using a conventional shampooing product with silicones, it might take a few weeks before you start seeing results after you switch to a natural shampoo such as Shikai Natural Everyday Shampoo or Avalon Biotin Complex Thickening Shampoo. During the first few weeks, you may actually find that your hair feels nottier than usual. This is because it may take several weeks to remove all the silicone residue.

Although its important to keep hair clean, its equally important to avoid over-washing hair. A common misconception is that hair needs to be washed everyday. Especially if you have dry or damaged hair, all you need is a shampoo twice per week. Over-washing hair can strip its natural oils and worsen the condition. Normal hair should be washed up to 5 times per week.

2. Protect
Excessive sun, color treatments, and perming can wreak havoc on even the most robust hair. The easiest way to protect hair from sun is to wear a hat or stay in the shade. Aim for less than 15 minutes of direct sun per day. Also stay away from "sun activated" hair lightening products, these tend to cause hair to dry out and speed up the process of sun damage. When it comes to hair coloring, opt for a natural hair coloring product such as Naturtint which uses herbal dyes rather than chemicals such as alcohol and peroxide. There are also organic perming and straightening systems available, just look for a professional salons that have gone organic near you.

3. Nourish Naturally
Just like skin, your hair needs to be pampered once in a while to maintain tip top shape. Apply conditioner at least with every other shampoo and do a hair mask once every two weeks. A luscious DIY solution is to massage one avacado and a cup of real mayonnaise creamed together over hair and leave on for 30min with a shower cap. You will see noticeable difference almost immediately after rinsing out the mask. Or try Hamadi's Shea Hair Mask for a bit more costly but fool proof solution.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Not drinking enough fluids can cause headaches, drowsiness, and long term effects such as kidney stones and urinary infections. Some 75% of Americans don't drink enough water, so chances are, adding more fluids into your day will help you feel and look better. You can go by the standard 8 glasses (8 oz each) of water per day as a rule of thumb, but to be more exact, how much water you need to drink depends on your gender, body weight, and activity level. A sure way to tell if you're drinking enough is by observing the color of your pee, aim for colorless to slightly yellow and you are good to go. Also, try to remember to hydrate before you get thirsty, since you might already be slightly dehydrated when you experience thirst. Watching what you drink is important too, for instance, soda, coffee, alcoholic beverages, or salty soups doesn't count since they may actually dehydrate you. A good way to remember is to drink a glass of water when you wake up, one with every meal, one before, during, and after exercising, and one before going to bed. Hydrated skin cells are juicy and plump, reducing fine lines and gives a nice dewy look. Folks with dry skin will see clear benefits while oily skin friends will have less acne breakouts.

When I got pregnant, I got this sippy cup for $7.99 to get myself to drink more water, and it really worked! I found that removing the barrier of having to open a cap made me drink more water more often, it's so easy to take a sip. Plus it feels like a Starbucks cup and looks nicer than most water bottles, and can be used again and again. Just cut a slice of lemon, and fill up with filtered water and you're ready to go!

Step 2. Eat your fruits and vegetables
At the risk of sounding like your mother, I must remind you how important it is to consume raw fruits and veggies. They are packed full of antioxidants and are not only good for your skin but also naturally boost the immune system. Many vitamins are destroyed by heat, so eating raw foods whenever possible is the way to go. For maximum benefit, eat fruits and veggies with their peels whenever you can. It's been shown that up to 90% of nutrients such as vitamin E (a great skin healer) is found in the peel only. While I wouldn't eat the peel of a pineapple or orange, apple and pear skin is not too bad at all. To avoid dangerous pesticides and herbicides, soak fruits and veggies in water with a teaspoon of baking soda for 10 minutes. Since most chemicals sprayed on crops are acidic, baking soda neutralizes and dissolves these chemicals quickly and safely. Even better, buy fruits and veggies that are certified USDA organic to be on the safe side. Besides, organic fruits and veggies tend to be more flavorful and tend to be packed with more nutrients anyway. Aim for 5 fruits and 5 veggies per day: Bring carrot sticks for a snack, an apple and an orange for breakfast, some blueberries with ice cream for dessert. The delicious possibilities are endless. Stick to it for a few weeks and you will see more even toned, radiant skin, make the change forever and delay the aging process!

Step 3. Exercise everyday
Skin cells are regenerating as we speak, every second there is new skin ready to replace the old. The speed at which this happens however depends on genetics, age, and your activity level. Just like every other organ, the skin takes in nutrients and excretes waste products as it works. Exercising your body will boost this natural regenerating process and sweating will help skin release its waste. (It's true that sitting in a Sauna also does this, but the other health benefits to regular exercising makes it completely worth it.) I know it sounds daunting at first, like, where do I find time to work out when I've got work, and kids, and dinner to make... etc. In fact, finding clever ways to squeeze in exercise can be fun and fast. It's been shown that exercising for 3 ten minute stretches is equivalent to exercising for a full 30min stretch. That means you can take a walk around the block with the dog (10min), take the stairs whenever you can (5min), do some pilate moves while being put on hold with the phone (5min), do some squats while brushing your teeth (5min). Deep breathing is also considered a form of exercise and a great relaxation tool. Do this while driving and it will decrease road rage and give you better complexion once you arrive at your destination.

Making lifestyle changes is never easy. But making small changes everyday without beating yourself up will build life-long positive habits in the long term. Try to make a commitment to make a change for 21 days. It's been shown that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, after that it just becomes second nature. Here's to more healthy skin naturally! Stay tuned for more tips, next up "3 steps to naturally beautiful hair".Natural Beautyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00475164130644820574noreply@blogger.com171tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3373445766504195657.post-68846547694488619502011-04-25T04:05:00.000-07:002011-06-02T05:02:11.510-07:00Living Organic for CheapEating healthy and using products that don't harm our bodies or the environment shouldn't be a luxury, it should be our right. But from cage-free eggs to all-natural face cream, responsibly made products can be double or more compared to the conventional products. Maybe celebrities can afford to taut organic cotton outfits for their babies and sip fair-trade lattes, but the average mom has to worry about paying for the mortgage and diapers too! How do we keep our homes free of harmful chemicals as well as maintain a budget to save for our kids college or even just to make ends meet?

Consider the Full Cost
First and foremost, we need to recognize that just because a product is cheaper at the checkout, it doesn't mean that its cheaper in the long run. It might sound obvious for me to say, but I'll say it anyway. Products containing pesticides or other toxins are more costly in the long run due to their negative impact on our health and our environment. Would you really rather pay $0.50 per pound less for apples that was grown in soil contaminated with arsenic or lead? After adding up the cost of potential medical bills, not to mention physical and emotional trauma, its clear that the extra few dollars up front is well worth it. Plus, organic fruits and vegetables often taste better and have more vitamins and nutrients.

But now you're saying, wait a minute, if I buy everything organic all the time, all the fifty cents will add up! Here are a few ways to help you stay green and save some green too. Keeping in mind that not all the methods will work for you, I was able to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars by using only some of these methods.

DIY It
If you have more time than money, this is the way to go. You can easily make your own laundry detergent, soap, lotion, and cleaning solutions. Just do a quick online search and you'll get hundreds recipes, or stay tuned for "The Best of DIY Beauty". It might sound daunting at first, but the recipes are really quite simple and usually doesn't take a lot of time. Make it a fun family project and let the kids get a little messy. In the end, you'll know exactly what went into the products and use them with confidence.

You can also DIY your organic food. Gardening is the best way to get organic veggies for the cost of some seeds and sweat equity. Once you start a garden, making compost is the next logical step. The "black gold" feeds your plants and consumes food scraps that would have ended up in the trash. We save hundreds per year by taking our trash to the local transfer station ($50/year fee, + $2/bag, we generate on average 2 bags per week, yearly cost: ~$260) rather than using the standard hauler service ($30/month, yearly cost: $360). More compost means less trash fees, and less landfill space, its a win-win.

Get it for free
Not many things in life are free, but why not take full advantage of the ones that are? Baby stuff is a great example. When I was pregnant, couples with school age kids were ecstatic when we took off their hands the crib, mattress, changing table, several strollers, among other essentials to help them make space in the house. One person's waste is another's treasure right? We were happy to receive the lightly used items along with tips for how to operate them, and we showed our appreciation by sending gift certificates, birth announcements, and inviting them over for a meal. When we are done using some of this stuff, I'm also looking forward to passing it on to other wide-eyed new parents.

Another great way to get it for free is to get them as gifts. To prevent getting yet another Christmas sweater that will sit in the closet then get thrown in the Goodwill pile after two years, make a wish list of green products you want and share it with your family and friends. It's easy to do this on Amazon.com and send the link to folks you anticipate to get gifts from. You can also discreetly ask for cash or gift certificates by sending a card or email that says something like the following:

"For this holiday season, we are making a commitment to a green lifestyle by changing our washer to a new energy efficient model which costs $900. While we appreciate any gifts we may receive, you can help us finance this new appliance by sending a gift certificate to Amazon.com. Thank you for supporting our family in going green!"

Deals and Coupons

Lastly, if you're too lazy to make it yourself and don't have anyone who want to give you gifts, you still don't have to pay the full steep price of organic ingredients. Check out websites that are dedicated to helping folks find good deals on organic stuff, there are some great ones listed below. Also, since many organic companies are small operations, they will gladly send you coupons or trial products if you email them.
In fact, the first soaps were accidentally made by fat dripping into the ashes of cooking fires. The saponification process is the combination of animal or vegetable oil with an alkali (sodium hydroxide for solid soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap). The result is soap, glycerin, and water. Most commercial, mass produced soaps are based on low cost animal tallow and includes synthetic fragrances, preservatives, moisturizers, coloring agents. Castile soap originates from the 1500's from the Castile region in Spain where it was first made and contains at least 80% olive oil. Most natural soap makers add small amounts of other oils such as jojoba, coconut oil, hemp oil for a luscious lather and optimum moisturizing effects. They may also add natural moisturizers such as goat or sheep milk, shea butter, essential oils for fragrance, and mineral colorants.

Because Castile soap does not use animal derived fats, it has less chance of being contaminated with toxins and also has lower impact on the environment. Its even better when the soaps are certified organic, such as the case the case for Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap and Vermont Soap. Castile soap in works wonders for individuals with sensitive skin, and is great for children and babies. Olive oil contains antioxidants which may aid in cell regeneration and encourages the body to produce prostaglandins which naturally helps moistens skin and improves its texture.

A simple bar of soap should leave your body clean and moisturized. Why settle for anything soaps with unnecessary additives that may dry or irritate your skin? More on this topic "What is harsh soap and how it dries out skin" coming up soon. In the mean time, check out the links below for some my favorite pure Castile soaps and leave a comment with your favorite soap and why.
If lanolin is so safe and effective as a skin protecting and healing agent, why is it not used in more beauty products? Reading ingredient labels on some other lotions, I also noticed lanolin oil and linalool are also commonly found. What's the difference between these three similar sounding ingredients? What are their functions and safety concerns? Here's what I came up with after doing some research of my own. Please leave a comment or question to add to the discussion!

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Lanolin is a wax found on sheep's wool that protects against the rain and the elements, and has been used to protect skin for more than 2000 years. When the wool is trimmed, lanolin can be harvested by squeezing the wool between rollers, thus no sheep are harmed during its manufacturing process. Although lanolin is a natural, renewable material it is possible for it to be contaminated with pesticides. The United States Pharmacopeia standard calls for a maximum of 40ppm (parts per million) of 34 known pesticides and no more than 10ppm of each type. While allergies to pure lanolin do occur, its frequency is fairly rare. More frequently, people are allergic to the pesticides found in lanolin. Also, much of the fear of lanolin allergy stems from misrepresentation of data from a 1950's study in which 1% of patients with skin disorders were found to be allergic to lanolin. This finding was incorrectly taken as 1% of the general population. Lansinoh guarantees that its HPA® Lanolin for breastfeeding mothers contains less than 1ppm of pesticide residue, which is much lower than the industry standard. The Skin Deep Cosmetic Database gives lanolin a rating of "4, moderate hazard", mostly because of risks associated with allergies and pesticide contamination. In my opinion, if you're using a high purity lanolin such as Lansinoh or Australian Golden Lanolin, there's really not much to worry about.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">While lanolin has great healing properties, its waxy consistency makes it difficult to work with when combining with other ingredients. Lanolin oil is derived from lanolin typically by low temperature fractional crystallization, a gentle process that isolates the liquid esters from pure lanolin. Lanolin oil is liquid at room temperature and is soluble in mineral and vegetable oils. It can be used in formulations where lanolin is called for but it provides a lighter texture with less drag. It's also a great emollient and offers protection from skin moisture loss similar to lanolin. Lanolin oil has a "0, low hazard" from Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, which is pretty much the most innocuous rating possible. The lower rating may be due to the fact that lanolin oil is further refined and has lower chance of containing pesticides compared to raw lanolin. Lanolin oil can be used directly on skin to prevent or treat chapped hands or lips, or can be mixed with other ingredients to make beauty products or your own.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Although linalool sounds like it might be related to lanolin, its actually a fragrance derived from plants such as lavender (Lavandula officinalis Chaix,) and sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). It is a terpene alcohol that has a pleasant floral scent with a hint of spice. While I did not find any references on using linalool as a skin protectant, some products utilize linalool as an insect repellent. One study from Sweden found that oxidized linalool caused 5-7% of patients developed allergic reactions such as ezcema to an oxidized form of linalool. Oxidation of Linalool is classified as a "5, moderate hazard" by the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. International Fragrance Association Codes & Standard recommends restricting its use in cosmetics, however, reality is that about 60 to 80% of scented hygiene products contain linalool. If you are prone to develop ezcema, I would recommend reading ingredient labels carefully and selecting products that do not contain linalool. Also it helps to avoid purchasing large quantities of scented products and replacing the cap to avoid linalool oxidation.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
moisturizer. Natural fats and alpha-hydroxy acids in milk naturally moisturize. Sheep's milk is the most luxurious of all because it's higher in butterfat, proteins, vitamins A, B, and E, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium than cow or goats milk. Also, sheep's milk contains lactic acid (an alpha-hydroxy acid) a natural, gentle, exfoliant that leaves skin glowing and soft.
These farms sell small batch, hand-made sheep products such as sheep milk soap, lotion, and cheese with an emphasis on keeping ingredients simple and natural.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Each bar is hand-made using the cold-process saponification method starting from scratch with goat's milk because its pH balance is a near twin to skin, so it leaves your skin feeling ultra moisturized. Then good fats like vegetable oils and pure essential oils are added. This is called superfatting and it creates super moisturizing glycerin in the process. Then each bar is swirled natural mineral coloring, blessed by a goat, and voila! - a work of art on your sink!
